Yin Yoga Postures

Specific yin yoga postures are recommended to promote energy flow and harmonize the body. Integrating these poses into your yoga practice will increase the healing of the body as well as balance emotions allowing for optimal self-expression.

Yin Yoga poses focus on lengthening of the deep fascia located throughout the body and concentrated in the mid chest, shoulder, pelvis, and thigh. Yin postures combine the element of time with the quality of surrender to powerfully transform the body. The typical yin yoga pose is held for 10 minutes. Poses that are held for this amount of time help to work into the deep structures of the body to open up and release bound tissues as well as tightly wound emotions.

The poses used in yin yoga allow for new depth and range of motion, an increased flow of energy, and an improved balance of muscles. This style of yoga is an effective complement to yang yoga that is faster paced and more solar energy. Yin yoga poses provide a deeper look inside oneself and can promote powerful transformations as tension is released from both the mind and body.

A well-known example of a Yin Yoga Pose is Pigeon pose. To attain this pose, begin in Downward Facing Dog pose. Lift the right leg and then slide the right knee between the hands so that it is placed inside the right wrist. The right foot should be flexed so that the heel is facing the left side of the mat. Inhale look up to the ceiling and on an exhale lower down to the mat and observe a deep stretch into the hip. The piriformis muscle is stretched in this posture for at least 5 minutes. Use the breath to hold you through the pose and observe both the physical sensations as well as the quality of the mind, noting any resistance and surrendering as the pose is held.
