Simple Yoga Poses For Beginners

Yoga has been a popular discipline for many years now. It is used by many people to uplift the mind as well as the body. Medical experts agree that this discipline, which originated from India, holds various health benefits everyone can take advantage of. One can readily reap the benefits of yoga by starting with simple yoga poses. Below are two of the easy yoga poses that can be tried by beginners and novices.

Sukhasana Sitting Pose

Place a practice mat (or a very thick blanket) on the floor and sit close to the edge of the mat. Stretch the legs forward so it is at a perpendicular angle with the torso. Go to a cross sitting position while maintaining the pelvis in a neutral position. Slip each foot under the opposite knee and relax so both feet rest comfortably on the floor. One way to check that the position is correct is to look down and an inverted triangle shape should be seen.

Place each hand on the sides. Press them against the floor so the body is lifted with the arms acting as a main support. Hold this position for a few breaths and slowly lower the body back to the floor. Lay the hands on the knees, palms down. With every in-breath, lengthen the spine, firm the shoulders and keep the pelvis in its neutral position. Go back to a normal sitting position with every out-breath. Do this for 5 to 10 breaths.

Fire Log Sitting Pose

The fire log sitting post is one of the most simple yoga postures. It is used mainly to stretch and to strengthen the spinal, respiratory and pelvic structures like bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. It is also a relaxing pose that can be used for meditation.

On a practice mat, assume a cross sitting position and insert the left foot under the right thigh. Put the right leg on top of the left. Tighten the pelvic area so that it stays in a neutral position. Upon inhalation, lengthen the spinal column and move the ribs forward a bit. Hold the breath for a few second and exhale. Repeat it for a few more breaths.
